Yesterday My Daughter Needed Me

Yesterday my daughter needed me.
And for the full three days before that too.
And every night this week.
It is very hard, to be needed so.
It is very hard to nurse constantly and not leave a room without wailing and screaming.
But yesterday my daughter needed me.

Yesterday my daughter needed me.
To touch and to hold.
She felt insecure and scared
And so very very small.
She needed her mother dearly
to know everything was alright.
Yesterday, my daughter needed me.

Yesterday my daughter needed me.
Despite what everyone says.
Leave her, they say.
Let her learn independence, they say.
She’ll never learn to be without you, they say.
But yesterday my daughter needed me.

What you don’t know is that because my daughter needed me
And because I was there
She grew between yesterday and today
Just a little bit more.
She learned something new
And said something different
And she didn’t look back
When she took a few steps forward.

So my yesterday my daughter needed me.
But today she doesn’t necessarily so.
So go to your baby.
They don’t always need you so.
